Emancipation

Questions & Answers

Question: I am 16 years old, i am no longer living in my parent's home. And they don't want me back. I don't have a job or my license but I have several places I could go if I got emancipated and be supported until i got a job. Currently I've been moving around places so it hasn't been easy getting a job. But once I get emancipated and move to where I want to be I can. How can I convince the judge that I will be fine on my own?

Answer:

LawForKids.org lists the criteria that need to be met in order to demonstrate to the court that the minor is able to become emancipated. In addition, the website devotes an entire section to the questions that different minors have asked regarding Arizona emancipation law.

However, keep in mind that (1) a parent must furnish reasonable support for their child and cannot contribute to the delinquency or dependency of a child and (2)  that certain laws are implicated when a child runs away from home.

There are many services available to a minor in need of help (see the 1-800 links available of lawforkids.org). If you are in immediate danger, please call 911.
