  • I am a homeowner, temporarily living and working out of state and have allowed a family member to live there rent free. She is taking over the utilities, I continue to pay the mortgage, taxes and insurance. She also will take care of maintenance and her own personal desired improvements, with permission, at her expense. My question is, does this relationship put me in a position of being a landlord, which I do not want to be, or am I a non-resident homeowner? Can you point me to state law and statutes on this subject?

  • My landlord gave us more than a 48 hours notice to do a building/maintenance inspection for either the 21st or the 22nd. They showed up on the 23rd and I was told that they already gave me notice and that because it took longer than expected it just rolled over to the next day. I received no notice that it was rolling over to the next day and she even said that she didn't have to give that kind of notice because I got one about them showing up on the 21st and 22nd
  • we had no electric in one room of our rental for 9 months. It would sometimes flicker when we jumped on the floor or slammed the door. We contacted the landlord several times to repair it. We have several text messages stating such. The cost to repair was more than 50% of our rent. We gave our 30 day notice on July 2 for August 1st after months of trying to get this repaired. Our landlord checked us out on Aug 1 stating everything was perfect and we would receive all of our deposit back in 14 business days. Our total deposit was $1850- we received $300. They stated we did not give them notice
  • I leased my house to a couple with a teenage daughter. It has been month to month after the first year. The wife signed the lease in her name only and then the couple divorced. She moved out and the ex-husband stayed with his daughter in the house. Is the ex-husband still liable for the provisions of the lease his ex-wife signed? Or is the ex-wife responsible? Thank you.
