Guardianship of Minor
questions & answers
Question: I am not wanted by my family anymore, im 17 and have been out of the house already for 2 months on my own, living with my girl friend. I want to buy an apartment, and buy a car, but since im 17 would It be possible to do so?
Answer: On August 12, 2005, an Arizona law went into effect that permits minors who are at least 16 but not yet 18, to apply to be emancipated or to be declared legally an adult. The minor must prove they are financially self-sufficient and able to provide their own food, housing and medical care without parental assistance. You can find the information and forms for Emancipation at http://www.superiorcourt.maricopa.gov/SuperiorCourt/JuvenileCourt/emancipation.asp.
