Name Change

questions & answers

Question: I turn 18 in October. I was wondering what it would take to change my last name to my moms maiden name in October. My mom is okay with it and father hasn't been in my life. Also my mom and father are seperated and going through child support issues. Is there anything that would prevent me from doing that? If so what can i do?

Answer: When a minor files for a name change the court will usually require all adults with legal rights over the minor to consent.  When an adult files for a name change, this is not required.
In order to change you name legally you must complete and file the appropriate paperwork with the Superior Court.  You must file with the Superior Court for the county in which you live.  When filing the application you may be asked for your fingerprints so that the court can conduct a criminal background check.  A judge will then decide whether the name change will be granted.
After a name change is granted you will need to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles, your employer, etc. so that their records reflect you changed name.
