Question: I left some of my belongings inside the house i was renting a room from. Can the landlord change the locks on his house now that i live somewhere else?
Answer: Once a tenancy ends, a landlord may change the locks. However, a landlord is responsible for storing a former tenant’s belongings and providing the tenant with a list of those belongings as well as any reasonable costs associated with their storage (A.R.S. 33-1370). A former tenant who leaves personal belongings behind at the end of a tenancy should notify the landlord immediately (and also send a letter to the landlord by certified mail, keeping a copy of for the tenant’s own records) and request that arrangements be made for the former tenant to collect their belongings.
