Forms and Letters: Housing

questions & answers

Question: My landlord told me they intend to sell the property I am renting because they cannot afford necessary repairs. I still have several months on my lease. All they have said is "lease agreements are broken all the time." Can they terminate my lease this early on? What are my rights in this case?

Answer: When the property that a tenant is renting either is going to be sold or has been sold, tenant’s rights and responsibilities will depend on a number of factors, but, regardless, the tenant’s landlord is required to provide the tenant with advance written notice.
