Food Stamps, Cash Assistance
questions & answers
Question: I would like to know if I'm still eligible for cash assistance for my son (I'm not his birth mother)under the kinship program. I was told by a friend I could receive cash, but I know nothing about this. Because at my last appointment I was told I could no longer receive cash assistance for him .I'm up for recertification for medical, foodstamps and cash, if I can still receive it for him.
Answer:
-The general eligibility requirements for Cash Assistance can be found at the link here. Usually, the Kinship program is designed for someone other than the parent. However, the Department of Economic Security’s website (DES) states that eligibility requires: a person caring for a child must be over 55 years of age and the child must be under 19 years old and living with the caregiver. (Read more about Kinship here). Whether this will apply to a parent of a child would best be determined by contacting the Family Caregiver Support program in your local area.
