Questions & Answers

Question: Should I seek counsel in a case where I ihave a protective order and defendant filed an answer with a lawyer?

Answer: That's not a bad idea at all. Anytime you have to appear in court with a domestic violence offender, it's hard enough. Doing so when the offender has hired an attorney makes it even worse - even when the opposing lawyer is fair, courteous and follows the rules. There's simply no substitute for having a legally trained advocate at your side, and the stakes (your personal safety) are way too high. If you can afford it, you should hire someone immediately. If you cannot, you should contact one of the legal aid organizations in your area. Community Legal Services, Southern Arizona Legal Aid, DNA People's Legal Service or the Volunteer Lawyers Program can determine if you are eligible for low income assistance. There are also many other resources available to help victims of domestic violence listed by county in this website. Don't wait on this!
