Question: My brother has been diagnosed with stage IV cancer. Both our parents have passed away. Can I take a leave of absence under the FMLA to care for him? Would a personal leave of absence cover this situation?
Answer:
Generally the FMLA, or Family Medical Leave Act, allows an employee to take unpaid time off of work in order to care for an ill child, spouse or parent. Under this act, a person may take up to twelve weeks leave during a 12 month period. For more information about eligibility requirements please review the article on this site titled, "The Family Medical Leave Act." Some employers offer alternatives to FMLA, this information is generally found in the employee handbook.
