How to Get Help In Maricopa County If You Are A Victim of Domestic Violence Or The Person Committing Domestic Violence

If you are a victim or believe you may be a victim of domestic violence, or if you are the person committing or believe you may commit domestic violence, there is help available. There are many ways you can help yourself and many people available to help you. Read on to learn more about the things you can do to help yourself and to find out about the people who may be able to help you.
How You Can Help Yourself
- Call 911
- Call immediately if you believe that you are in danger of being physically hurt. Do not wait until you have been hurt.
- File an order of protection or injunction against harassment
- To order the person who is hurting you to stay away from you and so the police can arrest that person if he or she violated the order. However, an Order of Protection is for preventing domestic violence. It is not for child custody orders or preventing access or visitation to a child unless harm may result to the child or the acts of domestic violence involved the child.
- Leave the scene. No matter who you are, or where you are, or what the other person is doing. Leave. Go somewhere safe and peaceful to calm down and to protect you from being a victim of domestic violence, or from committing an act of domestic violence.
- Talk to a counselor. This person can help you with your own safety plan so you and your children feel that you can leave the person who is hurting you; or the counselor can help you if you are the person committing the domestic violence. Find out why you are hurting the other person and help you stop.
- Tell a friend about your problem to get support and help.
- Get help from the community. There are many places in the community that can help you.
People and Agencies Who Can Help You
Emergency Medical Services
Emergency rooms at hospitals or the fire department paramedics can help you with immediate physical injuries of domestic violence.
Call 911 now if you need emergency medical help from the fire department.
Police and Victim Services
The police help with domestic violence on the scene. Some police departments also offer "civil stand-by" that is when an officer goes with you to your home to help you get property owned by you or your children. A "civil stand-by" cannot be used to divide shared or community property. Call 911 now if you need emergency help from the police to protect you from domestic violence. Emergency Shelters
Shelters are places where you, and in most cases your children, can go if you decide to leave and get away from the person who is hurting you. It is a safe harbor. The addresses of the shelters are kept secret so that the person who is hurting you cannot find you. In the shelters, you will have a safe place to stay, food, and often counseling, to help you and your children. Many shelters also have support groups and counseling services. However, the purpose of the shelters is to help prevent domestic violence. The shelters are not meant to stop access or visitation to a child unless harm may result to the child or the acts of domestic violence involved the child. Help! Domestic violence occurred. My husband left me unexpectedly. We have a daughter. I have no income, no car, no phone and now a lease that I can't pay, what are my resources?

Is it possible to have a restraining order or protection order without divulging my home address or place of work. I am getting death threats regarding an my girlfriend's ex who has a history of domestic violence. If he knows this information and knows our whereabouts he will take action against it and has no care in the world for the reprocussion of the law including his own life.

I'm a mother of 2. My oldest is 24 but mentally handicapped. My daughter is 14. Her father not my son's and I live together and co-parent. We are not in a relationship. He is mentally, verbally and has been physically abusive to me. Can I file for a temporary order to protect my children and myself from him? We share custody of her. Please help. Thank you.

My husband has been mentally and physically abusive for the past 7 years. In January he punched me repeatedly in front of our five year son and kick the door in when I kicked him out. My oldest has told me that that he to was hurt by my husband. I've now lost my home(being evicted) and Job because of this. My parents live in another state where I have more opportunities to live a better life with my kids. Can I move to another state and Handel my DV case and divorce?

My dad left when i was baby. He just came back into my life a year ago, my mom has custody of me. But this past year i have been emointally abused and have had a few situatons with being physically abused as well. This is causing my school work to drop, and i cant take living here anymore. I have tried to find a way to live with my dad until i graduate, but i would like to know if there is any legal way i can move out, so I can get my life together and finish school without any problems.

My girlfriend and I allowed her brother (a 300lb man) to crash with us after he got evicted. After about 2 1/2 weeks we realized this was a terrible idea and told him he needed to leave. He packed most of his things and left but took some things that didn't belong to him. Upon him returning for the last if his stuff, we told him he was not allowed to enter the premises and we would bring him his stuff. He got mad and tried to force his way into the house and my girlfriend fought him off. She got arrested for"hitting" him. Isn't this still a form of self defense considering he doesn't live here

My husband and my daughter (his stepdaughter) were in an argument and my daughter slapped my husband in the face. My husband called the police and now wants to get a restraining order. My daughter was in the wrong by getting physical but I also don't think a restraining order is needed. Where does that leave me. My daughter can never come to our house again.

If an order of protection says that the defendant has to surrender his firearms to the Mesa PD, can he give them to a friend instead? Is this violating the order of protection?

I see a lot of doctrine that establishes the means of acquiring a Protection Order, but I see nothing in regards to the ramifications of filing a false one. So my question is; does filing a false Protection Order, also include immunity from prosecution? Is there any justice for anyone who has been the victim of a system remedy, which has been abused to the point where it has become weapon, rendering it ineffective? Its ironic that a system created to help victims, in turn makes victims. Was that the intended purpose, to deprive fathers of their children and create a plethora problems?
