Child Support
questions & answers
Question:
I owe child support enforcement for back child support, but will soon receive an inheritance. Will they take this?
Answer:
The following is provided for general information only. To find out how the law applies to a specific situation, contact an attorney directly. The Department of Economic Security’s Department of Child Support Enforcement Office(DCES) has a number of enforcement options to collect unpaid child support. According to DCSE, in some situations one of these options is asset seizure, through which “DCSE may seize (take) bank accounts or other property to collect child support arrears of twelve months or more in unpaid support or when there is a court ordered judgment. Financial institutions may include banks, credit unions, federal and state savings and loan associations, trust companies, mutual funds and other similar institutions.”
