Protection Orders
questions & answers
Question: I was granted an order of protection from a judge after receiving death threats from former employer for resigning after enduring abuse. They are now harassing me by means of my unemployment. Such as making up lies about me and appealing constantly. They are even giving bad reviews of me to potential employers. What are my options??
Answer: It is illegal for someone (including a business) to deliberately sabotage another person's livelihood and career opportunities with false commentary about their character or past job performance. The legal solution is a lawsuit for either defamation or "tortious interference with a business expectancy." Both theories can get complex, so you will definitely want to consult with an attorney, but here are some Arizona cases to get you started if you want to search them or stop by a law library: Dube v. Likins, 216 Ariz. 406, 167 P.3d 93 (App. 2007), and Fillmore v. Maricopa County Water Processing Systems, Inc., 211 Ariz. 269, 120 P.3d 697 (App. 2005). Good luck!
