Question: If I am currently at work,and I need to leave work early to take paid sick pay,for true reasons for sick pay,can my job deny me sick pay,and can they give me a point for leaving work,not sure on this

Answer: The answer to this question is different if this incident occurred before or after July 1, 2017. Before July 1, 2017, there was no law in Arizona that required or prohibited employees from providing paid sick leave. Employers could provide paid sick leave and administer the paid sick leave policy as they wanted to. As of July 1, 2017, Arizona employers were required to provide paid sick leave time to employees. Employees are entitled to 40 hours of paid sick leave (24 hours if the employee works for an employer with less than 15 employees) per year. Employers can grant employees the paid sick leave as of July 1, 2017, or have employees earn sick leave at the rate of one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. If this incident occurred shortly after July 1, 2017, and the employer's policy has employees earn paid sick leave at the rate of one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, the employee involved in this incident may not have been eligible for paid sick leave. But if the employee was eligible for paid sick leave, the paid sick leave law says: 1. Earned paid sick time can either be used in hourly increments or the smallest increment that the employer’s payroll system uses to account for absences. 2. An employer can require advance notice of paid sick leave use provided that the employer provides a written policy that contains procedures for providing advance notice. If the employer does not provide an employee with a copy of the written policy, the employer cannot deny the use of earned paid sick time without advance notice. 3. An employer cannot count earned paid sick time as an absence that may lead to an adverse action (including discipline and discharge)?
