Child Support

questions & answers

Question: My 19 year old daughter is in college and she is wanting to know if she is eligible for support to help her pay for college from the non custodial parent.

Answer: If your daughter is 19, there is no longer a non-custodial parent.  She is an adult under the law and no one has custody.  Occasionally, when parents make a good income, they will agree in the divorce settlement to pay for college.  However, unless there is a specific provision in the settlement documents that requires the other parent to pay for college, that parent has no obligation to do so.
