Child Support

questions & answers

Question: Hello!! at the present time I'm a residente of Phoenix,Az. However, I've a child support case going in Puerto Rico. I'm trying to obtain a reduction in my child support payments since now I have a new baby and my financial situation has been deeply affected, plus others factors that I'm willing to discuss later. From the child support office in PR I was suggested to start my case here. How do I start that process? Who do I contact? What kind of paperwork do I need? Thanks for your time!!

Answer:

According statue ARS 25-10032 of the Arizona Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA), the court that made the initial child support ruling has exclusive, continuing jurisdiction over the case. Because the ruling originated in Puerto Rico, one must refer to their statues and laws regarding changing jurisdiction to Arizona. Once the jurisdiction is changed to Arizona, the subsequent information will walk you through modifying child support payments. The following link provides information on modifying child support payments in the event of a change in the household that significantly affects income (ex: a new child).

In order for a modification in child support to be granted, the packet provided in the link must be filled out and either mailed or brought into the Arizona Department of Economic Security. Please use the following link to find the DCSE office nearest you. ARS 25-320 outlines Arizona law regarding child support, and may be used as a reference for further inquiries.
