Domestic Violence

questions & answers

Question: I havea one-year old son with a man who has broken my arm and has been charged with aggrivated assault. I obtained an op and he has violated it manytimes. He has broken my nose and I filed charges against him for that. He is still not in jail. He has denied any domestic violence in my family law case and is making making false police reports that makes me sound crazy. How do i protect myself and my son from such a person when the county seems happy to go along with what he has been doing to me? Is there anyone who can go to court with me?

Answer: Many county attorney offices have Victim Witness advocates who go to court with you. you have rights to be notified of all hearings and have input into sentencing when the time comes.  You may also want to speak with the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence.  Their phone number is:  800-799-SAFE (7223).  They are available M-F 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  They can offer assistance for a variety of things, including talking to someone about what you can do to enforce an OP.  There are many shelters that offer counseling as well as a safe place to stay if you need it.  Please check out http://azlawhelp.org/viewresults.cfm?mc=1&sc=4.  Look under your county to find the various resources.
