Eviction
questions & answers
Question: My neighbors were evicted from their home. Myself and roommates were helping the family by letting them use our personal items not knowing about anything like this, they never disclosed that they might be evicted. what do we need to do and when will the renters be able to come back to move their stuff and give us back our stuff? This happened today. 4/15/2015
Answer: You should immediately talk to the landlord or manager and tell them that some of your stuff is in the house (or now in storage) and you want it back. You should try to get together any proof you have that you own the items, like receipts or at least a cellphone picture of the couch (or whatever) in your house in the past. The landlord must store the tenant's property for 21 days after the eviction and then can sell it or give it away, but you should go to him/her immediately. If the landlord/manager won't return your property, you'll need to call in the police or sheriff to assist you in recovering what is yours. The renter is not allowed back in the property but you should get them involved too, especially if they will help you identify your property.
