Question: I signed a joint lease and paid my share to leave. The other person did not pay. Can they go after me for the balance?

Answer: The Arizona Residential Landlord and Tenant Act governs the lawful and unlawful behavior of landlords and tenants and can be found under §§ 33-1301- 1381 of the Arizona Revised Statutes. The tenant has a duty to pay rent to the landlord. A.R.S. § 33-1314 allows landlords and tenants the ability to create a rental agreement in any way that is not prohibited by law. You should refer to the lease agreement that you signed with the landlord when you first moved into the property to determine what the joint lease agreement states regarding rent.
