Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities
questions & answers
Question: Does a landlord need to have my social security number and drivers lisence.?
Answer: Social Security numbers can be collected from tenants at the time they apply for or sign a lease. This information may be used to run a credit check or to assist in finding the tenant should they abandon the property. Although you can refuse to give this information to the landlord, it may result in your application being denied as there is no legal stipulation that protects you from not disclosing this information. If you are concerned, you may ask your landlord what the information will be used for and can offer to provide them with a recent credit report. Again, there is no legal requirement that they allow you to do this.
