questions & answers
Question: is it illegal to work in exchange for rent? and can my apartment manager tell me with no warning that she no longer using me on friday and on monday gives in a 5 day notice to pay or quit but they still owe me money or rent for work done
Answer: Although the Arizona Residential Landlord and Tenant Act does not apply to arrangements involving “occupancy by an employee of a landlord as a manager or custodian whose right to occupancy is conditional upon employment in and about the premises” (A.R.S. 33-1308(5)), such arrangements are not unlawful in and of themselves. You may wish to discuss your specific situation with an attorney. There are links to free or low-cost legal assistance on this website.
