Question: I am a PhD student at a private university. My program was sold to me as a 3.5 year program. I started the program in February of 2015 and had a completion date of July 2018. This is indicated on my student loan document. Through 2016 and 2017 had been working on an approved dissertation. In January of 2018, (6 months prior to finishing) I was informed my dissertation was no longer approved and I would need to start a new one. This extends my program by more than a year. More loans, more work... This is a frequent tactic by this university. Brings them in a lot of money, learners lose
Answer: The U.S. Department of Education may be a good resource for further inquiry. See https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/ and/or https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/avoiding-loan-scams.
