Child Support
questions & answers
Question: What is the purpose of child support and what can the obligee use the money for?
Answer: The purpose of child support payments is to ensure that parents fulfill their obligation to provide for their children. See A.R.S. 25-320 and A.R.S. 25-501. Therefore, any child support funds should be used to provide for the welfare of the child for whom the payments were made. There are no statutory limitations or mandates as to what child support funds must or must not be used for. It would be logical to assume that such funds should not be used for extravagant gambling excursions or other wasteful uses. However, there is no prohibition against combining child support funds with other income to support the recipient parent’s household needs, absent of contrary court order.
