Question: What can I do if my son turns 18 in July and does not want to listen to me and does not want to go to school or work?

Answer: Generally, a parent has no duty to support an adult child that has reached the age of 18, unless that adult child continues to attend high school. See A.R.S. § 25-501(A); A.R.S. § 25-320(F) (or if the adult child has severe mental or physical disabilities, see A.R.S. § 25-320(E)). Even in the case of a continuing high school student, the obligation to support the adult child generally does not extend past the age of 19. Upon reaching the age of 18, a parent can ask an adult child to leave the house. If the adult child refuses to leave the house, eviction may be necessary.
