Paternity

questions & answers

Question: I have a 10 year old daughter with my ex-wife. I just found out that she may not be mine. What are my legal rights to the child? I have been with this child from birth. And now I find out someone else may be the father.

Answer: Your first step may be to legal establish paternity with a paternity test, which will leave little doubt who the father is. Without knowing much more about your situation, if you are currently paying child support and the child is not yours, you may want to consider filing for a change in the child support. Below is a link to the child support website, which is run by the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES). On the site it has the tools if you want to file the petition yourself. You may also want to consider contacting a family attorney and discussing your situation with them. https://www.azdes.gov/az_child_support/
