Question: Can the landlord charge the tenant for notices served to them?

Answer: Ordinarily, probably not. However, there are no hard and fast rules about what landlords may or may not charge their tenants for. If a landlord is compelled by some action or inaction by the tenant which violates the rental agreement to spend money on postage or on a process server or on an attorney in order to deliver a formal notice to a tenant, and the landlord then seeks that tenant’s eviction, the landlord may recover those costs from the tenant. However, if you feel that you are being charged for notices in a way that is not reasonable, then you may wish to speak with an attorney.
