Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities

questions & answers

Question: I have been receiving a bill from my leasing facility for rent. I signed a renewal in September. I pay the amount stated and I have my receipts. I have just received, at the end of the month, a bill from the leasing office stating I am underpaid. Am I obligated to pay the underpayment due to their mistake?

Answer: A tenant who believes that they are being charged an incorrect amount in rent and/or other fees may find it helpful to bring to the property manager copies (not the originals) of their receipts as well as a ledger showing the tenant’s calculations along with a signed and dated letter briefly and politely explaining the landlord’s mistake.
