Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities
questions & answers
Question: I rented a home for 15 years. It was bought by a new owner 7 years into renting. A mirrored door in bathroom was broken before new owner bought house. I moved out this month and the owner is telling me I need to pay him for the mirror $650 that was broken years before he bought house. Do I owe him this money? How would I get a copy of the home inspection walk through when he bought the house?
Answer: Unfortunately, this is a typical “one side says this, but the other side says that” situation, which is why tenants whose homes are sold to new owners may benefit from carefully documenting the condition of the home (through photographs/video/etc.) at the time of the ownership change and may also wish to ask both landlords to conduct walk-throughs with them to avoid potential future misunderstandings.
