Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities

questions & answers

Question: If you have been unemployed due to COVID-19. I Paid this months rent and have three months remaining on a lease, can you be released. I’ve lived there over two years and have always paid on time. I asked the lady in the office and she was very rude and said that I have to pay for every month. I’m trying to do the right thing and let them know I am now financially strained.

Answer: First you will need to provide your landlord with a letter from your former employer showing that you've been terminated from your job or documents showing that you have applied for unemployment benefits due to COVID-19. As a sign of good faith you should offer part of the rent if you have it. If you show these papers to your landlord you cannot be evicted for non payment of rent for 120 days. You will need to show these papers to a judge if landlord still tries to evict you. Remember, after 120 days you will have to pay all rent owed to your landlord or be evicted. this includes any rent that you have not paid. Hope this helps!
