Child Custody
questions & answers
Question: If I agree to Sole custody with my ex wife, does that give up my rights as a father to allow in the future my dauther to be adopted?
Answer:
Please see our article on Things You Should Know about Custody and Parenting Time. In that article it says, "sole custody means that one person has sole legal custody of a child. In this situation, the court orders that one parent be responsible for making the major decisions regarding the child’s care or welfare. Although both parents may discuss these matters, the parent designated by the court has authority to make final decisions in the event the parents do not agree."
Giving up your rights as a father, also known as terminating your parental rights or consenting to adoption is different from determining custody. See question #382 for information on signing away parental rights.
