Question: Is a process server the only one that can serve a defendant?

Answer: Arizona Revised Statute: Section 33-1377 governs service of process in a special detainer action (eviction).  That statute allows the defendant (tenant) to be served by placing a copy of the summons on the door to the residence and mailing a certified copy of the summons to the defendant.  That can be done one day after personal service has been attempted.  Personal service can be by a process server , a sheriff, sheriff's deputy, or any other person appointed  by the Court.  Service of process is governed by Rule 4(d) of the Arizona Rules of Civil Procedure.
