Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities
questions & answers
Question: Is it legal for the manager of the property to ask for cash instead of money orders or checks?
Answer: There is no law against requesting rent payment in cash. However, any tenant whose landlord insists on being paid in cash should insist on receiving from the landlord at the time the cash payment is made a signed and dated receipt indicating what amount the tenant paid and what month (or other rental period) the payment was for.
