Choosing Where to Live

questions & answers

Question: Where can I get more information and help if I need emergency housing?

Answer:

Maricopa Elder Emergency Housing Program helps victims age 50 and older find refuge and resources to meet their unique needs. The Emergency Housing Program offers free, safe, temporary housing to older victims of domestic violence or elder abuse. Older victims have different needs than younger victims and the goal of the program is to provide an environment that will assist in the healing process.

More than 25 assisted living facilities and nursing homes in Maricopa County provide free housing for up to two weeks. Emergency room staff at many Valley hospitals can call the Senior HELP LINE when treating an elderly victim. Program staff assists the elderly victim with arranging program eligibility assessments and temporary housing placement, and also provides victims with emotional support and assistance in finding the community resources they need.

For more information on the emergency housing program, or to make a donation to the Bessie Shippey Assistance Fund, contact your Area Agency on Aging on-line or the 24-hour Senior HELP LINE at (602) 264-HELP (4357), toll-free at (888) 264-2258, or TTY/TDD at (602) 241-6110.
