Staying on the Job

questions & answers

Question: I have been working part-time; my employer has offered to make my position full-time. Is there a ceiling amount I can make before Social Security starts penalizing, i.e., taking $1 out of every $3 that I make? Thank you.

Answer:

The Social Security Administration does not have a penalty in place for people who make over a certain income.  However, there is a tax that  can be placed on social security benefits once a person reaches a specified income range.  These ranges vary depending upon how much a person earns, such as income taxes do when there is no social secuirty benefit involved.

To see how your social secuirty benefit may be affected you may want to visit the "Taxes and Your Social Security Benefits" section of the Social Security Administration's website.
